Marathon organizers consider drawing lots to select participants

Shanghai International Marathon organizers are considering selecting participants for the popular annual event by drawing lots this year.

Competition for the slots was fierce last year as runners tried to get one of 35,000 places in the event.

Online registration for last year’s race was handled on a first come, first served basis. The 18,000 slots for the 42km full and 21km half marathons were snapped up in a matter of hours on September 15. The remaining 17,000 slots for the 10km race and 5k health-run opened for online registration two day later.

Applicants were given waiting numbers after logging on to the event’s official site. Some had to get up early and find a fast Internet connection to assure themselves a place.

“We are studying the possibility of applying a drawing system this year,” Zhou Jin, general manager of organizer Shanghai East Best Lansheng Event Management Co Ltd, told Shanghai Daily today.

The marathon will be held in November but no date has been set.
