Man recalls wife on ship saying there was downpour and strong wind in last call before sinking

ZHANG Jianwei, whose wife took the trip with more than 20 neighbors, said she called him at 9pm yesterday. The passenger ship, named Dongfangzhixing (Eastern Star) carrying 458 people later sank around 9:28 pm in the Jianli (Hubei Province) section of the Yangtze River.

"She said there was downpour and strong wind outside in the call. So why did not the ship stop under such bad weather?" Zhang said.

He said he hoped authorities could organize relatives to reach the scene of the tragedy.

He said he had arrived at the office of the travel agency at 9am and had spent more than 7 hours waiting for more clues.
