A driver jumped into a river to escape traffic police officers who had stopped him for a check of drunk driving, police said on Friday.

The driver, surnamed Tang, took to the street after drinking a bottle of beer at lunch on Tuesday in suburban Jiading District, police said.

Tang said he didn’t expect the law enforcers in the afternoon “I was afraid when I saw the police,” he told Jiading TV.

Tang abandoned his car and jumped into the river along Xichenghe Street S., police said. He treaded in the water for about 100 meters and then climbed out with the help of the police.

Tuesday was the coldest day this week with temperatures during the day up to 8 degrees Celsius.

The driver is now under detention for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Tang was among eight drivers found with the same offense by Jiading police during the Spring Festival holiday. Police said another four were caught drunk driving.
