Man dies of rabies after untreated bite from stray dog in Pudong

A 20-YEAR-OLD man died of rabies this morning after he was bitten by a stray dog early last month and failed to get treatment.

The man was sent by ambulance yesterday morning to Punan Hospital in the Pudong New Area for symptoms including extreme agitation and confusion.

His father said the man was bitten by a dog in early January and didn't receive any treatment. Doctors suspected the patient had rabies and transferred him to the Shanghai Public Health Clinical Center, the designated hospital for infectious diseases in the city.

The patient was confirmed to have the disease, which is fatal if not treated in time.

The incubation period for rabies is usually from one to three months, though it can be as short as one week and as long as a year.

While there are rabies deaths among humans in the city every year, they do not surpass single digits, officials said.
