Man detained after woman threatened with knife

A man has been detained on suspicion of threatening a woman with a knife during an attempted robbery, Shanghai police said yesterday.

The 25-year-old suspect, surnamed Zhu, is alleged to have attacked the unnamed woman on March 4 at her apartment in Jing'an District. The victim had earlier advertised for a roommate and Zhu responded saying he wanted to see the apartment on behalf of his girlfriend, police said. Once inside her home, he produced a knife and demanded money from the victim, they said.

The woman, however, fought back and Zhu fled the scene.

Following an investigation, the suspect was detained on March 6 at a train station in his hometown of Harbin, capital of northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, police said.

Zhu, a married man with a young child, is alleged to have told police that he resorted to robbery as a "quicker way than working" to pay off his gambling debts, and that the attack in Jing'an was not his first offense.
