Lots of holiday fun at local scenic spots

Scenic spots across the city will host an array of activities from flower exhibition to food and music festival during the upcoming three-day Labor Day holiday.

The Shanghai Chenshan Botanical Garden is hosting an international orchid show featuring about 30,000 orchids of over 600 varieties. Some species are rarely seen, such as Vanda, monkey and moth orchids.

Children are able to learn ceramics making and attend lectures at the Shanghai Ceramics Art Museum, while an exhibition displaying Chinese ancient glass hairpins will be held at the Shanghai Museum of Glass during the holiday.

A food and music festival will take place at the Dishuihu area, and a hand-made artwork exhibition turning various waste items into artworks will be held at the Jinmao Tower.

Neighboring countries are most popular tour destinations during the three-day May Day holiday, while amusement parks, water towns and beach resorts are among the most favored domestic stops, travel agencies said.

But trips to Hong Kong should further cool down during the holiday, with prices of group tours dropping about 20 percent from the same period last year, they said.

Seoul, Phuket and Bangkok attract the largest number of bookings, while Shanghai has become the biggest source market of overseas tours during the holiday among all cities in China, according to online travel operator Tongcheng.

Travelers spend an average four to seven days for overseas tours for the holiday, it said.

Free and independent travel is favored by tourists to Japan, South Korea and Thailand with tour packages blending air tickets and hotels to these destinations sold out as of April 25 and there is a 10 percent increase of prices, said Tuniu, another online travel operator.

May is a traditional peak of weddings, boosting honeymoon trips to beach resorts during the holiday, it said.

For free and independent tourists, Lijiang, Bali Island, Xiamen, and Seoul are the most popular during the holiday, according to Chinese travel planning and booking website Mafengwo.

The average spending per person for independent tourists on air tickets and accommodation is 2,860 yuan (US$461) during the holiday, up 6.8 percent from the same period last year, according to the website.
