Logistics firm owner jailed for dumping hazardous waters to Pudong public green spaces

A private logistics company owner who provided unlicensed industrial wastewater processing service and dumped the waste water in greeneries in city's outskirts was sentenced to five months in jail for polluting the environment, the Pudong New Area People's Court said today.
The illicit gains from the service reached more than 70,000 yuan (US$10,773), the court said. The jail term also came with a 2,000-yuan fine.
According to the court, the man, surnamed Cheng, a 32-year-old former security guard, set up his own business -- a logistics company -- in Shanghai nine years ago (2007) and considered making more money by offering unlicensed industrial wastewater processing service last year.
Using the name of a local chemical plant, he signed a contract with a petrochemical storage and transport company on industrial sewage processing and started up this new business in March last year. The industrial waste he got from the petrochemical company was all dumped in some suburban green belts or sold to others.
To prevent being discovered by others, Cheng bought a used tanker truck and employed a driver to transport the truck at night. On August 18 last year, Cheng took 10 tons of wastewater from the petrochemical company and sold half of it to others. When he was dumping the remainder waste into a ditch in a greenery belt near Linghai Road, his act was detected by police. He ran away from the scene and later gave himself up to police.
The waste water he dumped was tested as one of the state-specified hazardous wastes.
Cheng told police that he profited more than 70,000 yuan from the illegal service and several thousand yuan from selling the wastes to others. He later expressed his regret and the willingness to make some compensation in court.
