Local university team wins prize in Solve for Tomorrow competition
A team from China East University of Science and Technology in Shanghai won the top prize in the data transmission category of the national Solve for Tomorrow youth science competition.
The team created a 3D color code to improve data transmission speeds and boost security.
A 2D code is widely used by WeChat and mobile payment applications.
Team member Bai Wen said the 2D code only has two colors -- black and white -- with limited content, so they wanted to improve it by creating a code with 16 colors.
“There have been some reports of people hacking the 2D code to scam money from people,” he said. “Our code greatly improves security.”
The Solve for Tomorrow competition launched in June, attracting 5,576 teams from 720 universities and high schools in the nation for prizes in six categories. Winners will have a chance to visit the United States.
