Local transport commission orders Didi to cancel function that urges riders to pay more to drivers

THE city’s transportation commission urged Didi Chuxing to stop a function that asks riders to give extra money to taxi drivers to secure a ride.
The commission acted following complaints over the past week that hailing taxis had become extremely difficult ahead of the Spring Festival holiday. Some users offered triple the prices to get a taxi.
Didi is the country’s largest car-hailing platform. The company said on Tuesday that it would remove the function in Shanghai, but it would take two weeks due to technical issues.
The practice is not reasonable and fair, the Shanghai Consumer Rights Protection Commission said.
“Priority is given to those who pay more, which disrupts the market order and is very unfair,” said Tang Jiansheng, the commission’s deputy secretary-general.
“We have received a large number of complaints saying empty taxis don’t stop, and the only way to get a taxi is raise the fare,” he said.
The cancellation of the function means the company would not suggest riders to raise their fares for a quick ride. However, users can still choose to add money if they want to.
