Local hospital develops liver cancer treatment and relapse forecast model

A liver cancer treatment and relapse forecast model has been developed by Shanghai Eastern Hepatobiliary Hospital and has been introduced to clinical practice to guide treatment and after-surgery chemotherapy, experts told a medical forum.

Liver cancer is one of the leading cancers in China and as well as around the world. There are about 500,000 patients being diagnosed with liver cancer globally every year and half of the patients are in China. Only 20 percent of new patients in the nation can receive surgery, as the majority ones are already in terminal stage. Even for those being able to receive surgery, half of them can have relapse.

“We invented the model based on big data from genetic screening and clinical practice to classify different patients for the most effective and appropriate treatment,” said Dr Shen Feng, the hospital’s vice president.

Experts said individualized treatment is very important. “Not blindly depending on so-called fancy new technology and just giving patients the most appropriate treatment are extremely important,” said Dr Wu Mengchao, the hospital’s president and founding father of China’s hepatobiliary surgery.
