A little black bear was bitten to death by several Siberian tigers at the Shanghai Wildlife Park in Pudong New Area on Monday afternoon after it, for unknown reasons, made the fatal trespassing.

A video clip shot by a netizen and uploaded online showed the bear was attacked by four tigers with witnessing tourists shouting.

The bear seemed "bitten to death" in only several seconds.

More tigers later gathered around the bear to eat its dead body, photos shot by another netizen showed.

The park operator said the bear was three years old and had just been moved into the bear zone of the park to live there.

"The bear was frightened for some reason and ended up running into the tiger zone," said Ni Li, a park official.

But what exactly frightened the bear in the first place was unclear, she said, adding it's rare for bears to act like that.

One of the photos showed the bear, looking frightened, was standing beside a sightseeing bus which was passing the gate to move from the bear area to the tiger zone. It was also the last time the bear was seen on the park’s security camera footage. Blocked by the bus, the security camera failed to tape what happened next to the bear.

There are two iron gates separating each zone for various animal species at the park to ensure safety, and animals would always move backward after touching the electrified wire netting system. The bear could have moved into the tiger zone when the gate was opened for the bus to pass.

The official said the park will install more surveillance cameras to enhance supervision coverage to prevent similar losses.

The park has about 30 black and brown bears.
