‘Leading Urban Transformations’ selected as theme for World Cities Day
The first annual World Cities Day will boast the theme “Leading Urban Transformations,” officials said today during a ceremony at Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Center.
A local administrative office for World Cities Day was also set up to organize celebrations, forums, exhibitions and other events to promote sustainable urban development worldwide.
The United Nations General Assembly last year designated October 31 as World Cities Day. The idea was first proposed in a declaration on October 31, 2010, to mark the closing day of Shanghai World Expo 2010.
Unhabitat.org said the goal is to advance ideas and practices of the Shanghai Expo for future development.
The designation is expected to promote the international community's interest in global urbanization and further cooperation among countries in meeting opportunities and challenges in urbanization. World Cities Day is also expected to reinforce the role individuals, non-governmental groups and organizations play in solving urbanization problems, according to unhabitat.org.
