Kids explore nature at Roots and Shoots camp

MORE than 30 primary school students attended a summer camp held by non-profit organization Shanghai Roots & Shoots to gain environmental awareness through activities at the Shanghai Zoo and the city’s Chongming Island.

The Eco-Kids summer camp from July 20 to 23 is part of the Youth for Environmental Sustainability (YES) Program designed for children. During the 3-day event, the kids learn to make fans and handkerchiefs decorated with leaf stamps and made toys and snacks for chimpanzees with the help of zoo keepers.

They also observed nocturnal animals at night, wrote the nature diaries and cooked pasta with organic food ingredients picked in the Dreamland Organic Farm on Chongming Island.

Through these activities, the students became interested in environmental topics such as protection of wildlife habitats, animal welfare, biodiversity and organic farming. One student said nature is an extraordinary piece of art.

“During the summer camp, the kids learned to appreciate many wonders the Mother Nature created and realized the importance of environmental protection,” said Megan Li, an organizer from Shanghai Roots and Shoots.

The YES Program also brings weekly environment lessons to local schools, featuring hands-on activities. In the last 10 years, it has developed a rich curriculum that includes Green Classroom, Paper Recycling, Life of A Forest, Safe Interaction with Dogs and so forth.

It has trained over 1,200 volunteer instructors to teach YES classes in five Chinese cities. Last year, more than 4,000 students in 56 schools participated in YES.

The program grew significantly in size with the long-term support from Applied Materials China, which also encouraged its employees to get involved in meaningful community service projects.

Both Shanghai Roots & Shoots and Applied Materials China are committed to introducing environmental education to China's youth, and through it nurturing future leaders with a vision to make the world a better place for all.
