International Arbitration Day in Shanghai strengthens IBA presence in China with SHIAC support

AS part of its growing relationship with China, the International Bar Association (IBA) is hosting its flagship arbitration event in Shanghai on 4 March 2016, with support from the Shanghai International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission (SHIAC).

The IBA 19th International Arbitration Day has attracted more than 500 of the world’s leading arbitration lawyers to Shanghai, reflecting the prominence of China in the global legal and business communities, and the importance of arbitration to doing business in China.

IBA President David W Rivkin, in Shanghai to address delegates, commented: ‘This forum provides an unique opportunity to develop the presence of the IBA in China and to strengthen our friendships with the leaders in the Chinese legal community. Undoubtedly, closer ties have been created and I am most grateful to our conference supporter, the Shanghai International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission, for doing so much to make this event such a huge success. We look forward to returning soon.’

Both national and international influential speakers from the field of arbitration will share their expertise with an audience of leading lawyers, justices and professors, following opening remarks by Anne Véronique Schlaepfer, Co-Chair of the IBA Arbitration Committee, and Jianrong Yang, Chairman of SHIAC.

SHIAC, also known as the Shanghai International Arbitration Center, was established in 1988 with the approval of Shanghai government and has been acting as an independent arbitration institute in the city.

It set up a China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone Court of Arbitration on November 22, 2013 to tackle with commercial disputes related to the FTZ and work on offering a better legal protection in this area.

By the end of last year, SHIAC accepted 100 disputes related to the FTZ and 9 of them are with a foreign party involved. The amount of money involved in these cases reached 575.33 million yuan, the commission said.
