Huangpu bans live poultry sales to prevent bird flu

Live poultry sales have been permanently banned in Shanghai’s Huangpu District to prevent bird flu, the district government said.

The five markets where live fowl sales were allowed will now sell chilled and frozen chickens and ducks.

Jing’an is the city’s only other district that bans live poultry sales, a practice it started last May.

Other districts stop sales of live birds between Chinese New Year’s Day and April 30 each year to prevent bird flu.

Such practices were introduced after H7N9 bird flu outbreaks in recent years.

Industry experts said they believe live poultry trading will eventually be forbidden in all downtown areas.
