Holiday to stay dry but colder weather on its way

SHANGHAI will be dry and cloudy for the rest of the holiday with the end of the annual flood season, the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said yesterday. Temperatures will range between 16 and 26 degrees Celsius.

It’s going to get colder after Tuesday though, with the arrival of a cold front from the north along with strong winds. Mornings and evenings will be particularly chilly, forecasters said.

Air quality took a slight turn for the worse yesterday when it registered as “slightly polluted” following a run of 26 “excellent” or “good” days. However, the expected strong winds will improve conditions throughout next week.

The city’s flood season saw more typhoons and rainstorms than last year, flood prevention officials said.

The 122-day flood season which began in June brought two typhoons, 18 rainstorms and nine floods to city, or about 50 percent more than in 2013, but caused no damage or losses, the flood prevention office of the Shanghai Water Authority said.

The water level of the upstream Huangpu River exceeded the alert level 59 times during the season while Suzhou Creek rose above its alert level twice.

Successful resistance to this year’s more intense flood season was proof that the enhancements to the city’s flood prevention ability had worked, the office said.

The city spent 30 million yuan (US$4.8 million) to repair levees in Jinshan, Qingpu, Songjiang, Fengxian and Jiading districts that saw flooding during last year’s storms.

Some 230 kilometers of levees along with 144 floodgates had been reinforced and some 1,000 kilometers of anti-flooding levees and 2,000 floodgates downtown were checked.
