High school students raise money for charity at comic fair

A TOTAL of 7,000 yuan (US$1,121) was raised at a comic fair held by Shanghai high school students yesterday for orphans in Liangshan County, Sichuan Province.

The students, from clubs at 18 high schools, sold items they had made like cartoon pillows, posters, rubber seals, postcards and mini-novels inspired by comics. Each club also designed a comic character based on their school uniform, location and other characteristics.

It was the first time city students held such fair, which was organized by the Shanghai Student Volunteer Union, Cheers Comic Club at Nanyang Model School and Luanma Comic Club at Shanghai World Foreign Language Middle School.

“To us, the fair is both a competition between comic clubs and a chance to help children in Liangshan,” said 17-year-old Catherine Yu, an organizer and student at Shanghai World Foreign Language Middle School.

Yu said the proceeds would go to helping orphans in Liangshan receive an education. Yu added they were working in conjunction with the Canadian Fuhui Charity Foundation.
