Health expert recommends sex education improvements

Sex education needs to be taught at a younger age because there has been an increase in the number of young women and teen girls having abortions in Shanghai, a health expert said.

Young people need to learn about contraceptives and the risks of abortion, said Wu Junqing from the Shanghai Institute of Planned Parenthood Research.

She said a previous study found 5 percent of middle school students have had sexual experiences. The figure rises to nearly 15 percent among high school students and 20 to 25 percent among university students.

“Young migrant female workers really stand out as their abortion rate is higher than the registered population,” she said at a health education lecture.

As a local political adviser, Wu said she has sent proposals to the government to improve sex education among young people. She said she has recommended regular lectures, as well as handing out free pamphlets about reproductive health to students, migrant workers and young people.
