Hacker jailed for linking school website to pornography pages

A hacker who gained control of a middle school’s website in Chongming County and linked it to pornography pages was sentenced to 10 months in jail for illegally controlling computers, Chongming County People's Court said today in Shanghai.

The man began hacking into systems three years ago and had broken into dozens of websites, mostly belonging to companies and schools, the court said. He did so in order to increase page views on his own websites and attract advertisers.

According to the court, a school technician discovered the hack attack when he was doing routine server maintenance on October 22. The technician, surnamed Xu, found two strange files on the server's hard disk that he couldn’t delete. After he clicked the links in one file, pornographic website pages popped up.

Xu reported it to the school and police.

The hacker, surnamed Yu, was soon traced by police and was captured at home. He told officers that he discovered a bug in the school’s computer system through a search engine and then uploaded a Trojan horse virus to the site. The Trojan horse enabled him to remotely control the server.
