Gang pretending to be uniformed force to fine Metro riders for 'using phones on escalators' under arrest

FIVE people who allegedly swindled passengers by pretending to be security workers of subway stations have been put under criminal detention, after residents complained getting "fined" in a Metro station for using mobile phones when taking escalators, the city's Metro operator said Tuesday.

The Metro operator said it received the tipoff from its official Weibo Monday morning, while caught the suspects the same afternoon.

"My friend was fined near Exit 20 at Line 11's Xujiahui Station," according to a Netizen's tipoff on Weibo. "The group of people were wearing uniforms and holding signboards. They claimed one will face penalty for using mobile phone on escalator." The Netizen added many people were fined for that then.

The Netizen also posted a picture of the pink receipt of the 10-yuan penalty, which was issued by a so-called Shanghai Public Transportation Order Supervision Administration, adding that the so-called receipt “looks rough and informal."

Staffers of the Metro operator and Metro police patrolled the involved station and all of its exits after receiving the report and soon spotted the suspects.

The five suspects, including four wearing fake uniforms, were caught at the scene. The authorities also seized another suit of fake uniform, a stack of penalty receipts and three signboards with them.

Further investigation is still ongoing.
