Fun creative coding for kids

SHANGHAI Science and Technology Museum became the first museum in Shanghai offering bilingual teaching courses on Swift Playgrounds, a new app that helps students learning coding and programming on Apple’s iPad. Both Chinese and English courses are available for students between nine and 13 years old from May.

Students or parents can check the museum’s public WeChat account to make reservation. The course is given every two weeks to a group of 16 students, the museum said.

In addition to teaching, the museum also plans to train teachers to teach creative coding in local primary and middle schools to benefit more students.

Wu Guoying, a museum official and the leader of the project, said the course requires no coding knowledge and is good for students to start up. “In addition to exhibition, teaching has become a primary task for modern museums. So we cooperate with Apple to introduce the course to encourage students to solve problems by interactive and fun methods. Museum should take the responsibility to promote knowledge and technology,” she said. “We want to achieve the purpose that ‘everyone can code’.”
