Fudan University student injured after a blast in a chemical lab

A STUDENT injured his hands after a blast at a chemistry laboratory in Fudan University last night, the university said today.

The blast occurred around 7pm on Monday. It triggered a smoke alarm in the lab. Some students also heard the blast, suspecting it to be a minor explosion.

Teachers and campus security staff arrived at the lab soon after and found a student, who was experimenting at the lab, injured. They rushed him to the hospital. The university said his condition was not life-threatening.

The cause of the blast is under investigation. The university has urged teachers and students to enhance the awareness about lab safety.

In September last year, three postgraduate students suffered eye and facial injuries after a similar blast in the lab of the College of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology at Donghua University.

Another postdoctoral researcher at Tsinghua University died after explosion during a chemical experiment in December 2015.
