Fudan University hosts symposium on Marxist journalism and media-influenced society

A symposium about Marxist journalism and the media-influenced society in China was held today in Fudan University.

“Marxist journalism was still vital and convincing today, but we need to develop it innovatively with social development,” said Jiao Yang, party chief of Fudan.

Zhu Yonglei, deputy director-general of the publicity department of the CPC Shanghai Committee, also said that Marxist journalism should be promoted with social development to provide guidance and inspiration for operators of new media, such as live broadcasting platforms.

“The live broadcasting platforms are different in quality and need to be supervised and guided,” he said. “Marxist journalism can help operators to learn core values in the industry.”

He said there were more than 20 registered live broadcasting platforms, which ran tens or hundreds of broadcasting channels.

Liu Binjie, a member of the standing committee of the National People's Congress and dean of the School of Journalism and Communication of Tsinghua University, said journalism education also needed reform as the information transformation and communication pattern had been changed by new media.

“Look at the US presidential election, the Briexit referendum and the presidential scandal in South Korea, they all showed the whole world that the traditional journalism has been overturned,” he said.

“We have to study the Marxist journalism with modern social features, develop journalism with Chinese characteristics and reform our education.”
