Free digestive disease screenings for seniors

The Shanghai Senior Citizens Foundation will team up with Shanghai Tianlun Hospital to offer over 100 free lectures and screenings for the elderly on digestive diseases in the districts of Hongkou, Yangpu, Zhabei and Baoshan starting in September.

The program is expected to screen over 5,000 elderly people a year, the foundation said today.

About 70 percent of local seniors keep digestive medicines at home and take medicine randomly instead of consulting a doctor, the program said after a survey.

“We found these elderly people usually keep two or three digestive medicines at home and take these medicines regularly,” said Dr Xu Shaozhi from Shanghai Tianlun Hospital. “Improper drug use can cause serious problems because the drug metabolism function drops by 40 percent in seniors. There are many stomach diseases that require different medicines. Taking medicine without consulting a doctor can cause an adverse reaction.”
