Former chief Shanghai prosecutor expelled from Party for corruption

FORMER head of Shanghai People’s Procuratorate, Chen Xu, was expelled from the Communist Party of China for severely violating the party’s discipline, the top disciplinary arm of the Party said on Thursday.

Earlier in March, the CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection announced an investigation of Chen.

The authority said in a statement that Chen severely violated the party's discipline and is in suspicion of bribery.

The violations include interfering legal affairs and abusing power for personal gains, involved in superstitious activities, accepting trips and rounds of golf arranged by others which violated the party's eight-point rules for frugality, accepting gifts and money to seek interests for others by abusing power, and his relatives also received properties from others.

Chen's retirement benefits will be canceled and his gains from violations be seized. The disciplinary body said it will transfer collected evidences and involved properties to judiciary authorities for further investigation into crimes Chen is suspected of.

Chen, 65, is a native of Shanghai. He served as chief prosecutor of Shanghai People’s Procuratorate since February 2008 and Party chief of the authority from June 2009.
