Foreign couple fined after being stopped by a citizen for evading Metro fare

A local resident stopped two foreigners, who went through a turnstile together with one ticket at the Shanghai Science & Technology Museum Station on Metro Line 2.

The incident, which was caught on the surveillance camera, happened on November 22.

The foreign couple can be seen arguing with the local resident, surnamed Lu, who stopped them. They were allowed to go after they paid a fine of 84 yuan (US$13).

Lu told thepaper.cn that he was angry that the security staff at the station did not try to stop them for evading the fare.

The Metro’s traffic law enforcement team told Shanghai Daily that the security staff at the station reported the matter to the station’s service center. They are only supposed to scan the passengers' luggage.

The authority said people can stop commuters who evade fares or report to Metro station staff.
