Father, believed to be trying to help son left behind, forces open train door, delaying Line 9 in rush hours

TRAFFIC on Metro Line 9 was delayed about 20 minutes, affecting at least hundreds of commuters, rush hour yesterday morning, after a man forced open a train door, Metro operator said.

Metro operator said they were forced to evacuate the train with the broken door and subsequently, following trains were delayed with prolonged intervals and traffic restrictions and the impact lasted for about 20 minutes since the incident took place around 8:20am. A lot of commuters had complained on Weibo or through Wechat that they got stuck on the trains or platforms during the traffic restrictions.

The reason behind the damage was believed to be the father already boarding the train trying to help his son who was left behind on the platform.

Witnesses reportedly said the man dashed and managed to board the train when the door was already closing at the Sheshan Station on Line 9. But when he turned around, he found his son failed to also get on the train and was left behind. He then dragged open the door by force in bid to stop the train from running. He finally caused the door deformed and some of its parts broken, the Metro operator said. The malfunction forced the train to be put out of operation.

All his moves were recorded in the security camera footage, Metro operator said.

Despite repeat warnings from the operator that passengers should never try to board the trains when doors are already closing or try to force open the doors, such cases with some causing damages and major traffic impact, still take place often in the city.
