Experts sound alarm over heart failure
HEART failure is a serious and growing health problem in China, medical experts warned at a forum in Shanghai.
Prevention, treatment, follow-up care and comprehensive control are important to curb heart failure, experts said. They also called for the creation of a standardized classification system to enhance treatment and patient management.
The incidence of heart failure among adults is 0.9 percent in China, which means there are at least 8 million patients. With rising prevalence of risk factors like hypertension and diabetes, the incidence of heart failure will further increase.
Heart failure represents a major health burden, as 24.5 percent of patients require repeated hospitalization and about half of patients die within five years, a mortality rate similar to many cancers.
There is still a gap between leading hospitals and grassroots facilities when it comes to treating it. Regional heart failure centers should promote training and set up a national network through academic exchange and communication.
Shanghai has established several heart-failure centers and it is important to include both public and private hospitals in the network, said Dr Wang Gaifei from Shanghai Yodak Cardio-Thoracic Hospital.
