Experimental classes in visual arts graduate

THE first 40 undergraduate students of two experimental classes at the Shanghai Institute of Visual Arts (SIVA) led by international creative design masters celebrated their graduation yesterday, with an exhibition of the gradation theses.

The classes were set up in 2013 jointly by SIVA and DeTao Masters Academy under a college-enterprise cooperation scheme to reform and innovate traditional art education with full use of international masters’ advanced concepts and knowledge as well as rich experience in relevant industries and education.

The first two classes, majoring in strategic design and innovation and creative animation, were led by internationally renowned design master Hartmut Esslinger and animation master Robin King, and also had masters from all walks of life participate in the whole teaching process in the past four years.

The experimental program adopts master studio and master-apprentice education model, which is widely accepted in the field of international art education.

After four years of study, over 95 percent of them will join famous companies in design, animation and some other industries or seek higher education, while some have not made decisions yet.

Most of the students who choose to work have their starting salaries twice or three times higher than those with same majors but in other classes.

The program has expanded into 11 majors and 32 classes with 685 students.
