Environmental violations up 45% in first quarter

Over 470 environmental protection law violations were recorded during the first quarter of 2015, up nearly 45 percent from the same period last year, the Shanghai Environmental Protection Bureau announced on Tuesday.

China's new Environmental Protection Law went into effect at the beginning of this year. Its statutes have improved the efficacy of enforcement efforts, said the bureau.

Specifically, a total of 28 million yuan (US$4.5 million) in fines were collected from 476 violations during the first three months, increases of 47.3 percent and 44.7 percent respectively compared to the same period last year.

Many of the infractions were for illegal discharges of waste water and gas, as well as unlicensed disposal of industrial wastes.

In a recent case, an unlicensed mill in Baoshan District was sanctioned for illegally collecting and disposing industrial oil beginning in 2010. On March 20, the Baoshan District People's Court handed the mill's owner, surnamed Xiao, a seven-year prison sentence and a fine of 300,000 yuan. Other defendants in Xiao's case received sentences ranging from one-and-a-half to three years.
