Documentary crew talks with fans

CREW of the documentary film “Ganglha Metok” talked and interacted with media and film buffs at the ongoing 20th Shanghai International Film Festival today. The film directed by Tibetan filmmaker Tashi Chophel is also vying for the Golden Goblet award in the category of documentary.

The film documents the stories of three young Tibetan women who bravely pursue a hair-styling career against all odds. It took the film's team two years to record and bring the girls' transformation to the big screen.

Director Chophel said that the film depicts a clash between traditional and modern values when rapid social changes are taking place in China.

Zhao Chengyou, an official with Chlitina - the documentary film's investor, said that the film's script distinguished itself out of around 400 candidates. The courage and perseverance of women in the story impressed them and they decided to provide funding for the film.

Zhao revealed that they are also considering to support the shooting of more outstanding homegrown documentaries. On Saturday the film will also be shown at Shanghai Theater Academy.

Tonight an experimental film "Hema Hema: Sing Me a Song While I Wait," a drama about a traditional ritual of the Kingdom of Bhutan, will also be screened at the festival. The film which received acclaims at international festivals explores human complexities, instinct and delicate emotions. It stars mainland actress Zhou Xun and Hong Kong actor Tony Leung.

According to director Khyentse Norbu, the story is not told with traditional methods like dialogues and facial expressions as many characters wear masks to exchange. It is also a philosophical picture about sadness, happiness, redemption and reflection.

The film is one of the 20 or so movies exhibited in the "Belt and Road" unit. As a new highlight of the film fest this year, movies from countries that were part of the Silk Road route are put on display. They highlight the culture, society, history and arts of the Belt and Road countries.
