Ctrip attributes website collapse to employee's mistake

An employee’s mistake caused the over 11-hour collapse on the service of Ctrip.com yesterday, the Shanghai-based company said today.

A Ctrip programmer deleted the executive codes on the company’s servers by mistake, the company said in a statement after an overnight investigation.

However, Ctrip said the accident had not resulted in the loss of any of its customers’ personal data or booking information.

The Ctrip.com said it was put out of service on its website and mobile application yesterday as a result of an “unknown hacker attack” since 11:09am. Engineers fixed most of the problems on 10:45pm last night, though some functions remain out of service. Visitors were advised to visit eLong.com, a subsidiary of Ctrip.

A statement by eLong about 6pm said it had been attacked and the site too was out of service for about an hour. The problem was fixed and operations resumed about 7pm.

It took so long hours to fix the problem because the giant website of Ctrip has thousands of subsidiary web services behind the Ctrip.com. Technicians had to resume the operations of the codes on servers while make sure all the sub-web services work properly, the statement said.

Ctrip has improved its system to regulate its technicians to prevent similar accident, the company said.

Ctrip’s problems came after services were suspended on Wednesday at Alipay, China’s biggest third-party payment tool.
