Country’s first medical center of longer-term treatments on congenial heart diseases sets up in Shanghai

A medical center offering long-term follow-up and treatment for persons with congenital heart disease from childhood to adulthood was set up in the city.
Heart experts in both pediatrics and adult medical can work together to give guidance and treatment for adults with complicated congenital heart diseases needing continuous treatment.
Previously, people, who received surgery in pediatric hospitals when they were children, have to go to adult hospitals for further treatment under Chinese medical policy, as pediatric hospitals can’t offer treatment to adults. But doctors at adult hospitals don’t have similar experiences on the treatment of congenital heart disease, which is mainly a children’s disease.
To solve the problem and streamline patient’s treatment, Shanghai Children’s Medical Center teamed up with Ruijin Hospital, Renji Hospital and Xinhua Hospital to set up a joint diagnosis and treatment center for adults’ congenital heart disease, the first facility of such kind in the nation, prior to the arrival of World Heart Day over the weekend.
China is one of the countries with the largest number of children born with congenital deformities, among which congenital heart disease has the highest incidence affecting seven to eight children among every 1,000 newborn babies in the nation. There are over 120,000 children born with congenital heart disease in China every year.
“Congenital heart disease is the leading cause for the death of Chinese children below five years old. If not receiving treatment, about half of the children die within one year after delivery,” said Dr Liu Jinfen, a cardiac surgeon from Shanghai Children’s Medical Center. “While most children can be cured of their congenital heart disease through surgeries during their childhood, about 10 percent with complicated disease need repeated surgeries and care after they grow up.”
