Citywide safety check after boy, 13, drowns in Fengxian wave pool
CITY authorities have started a safety check on all similar swimming facilities citywide after a 13-year-old boy was drowned when swimming in a public wave pool Saturday evening in suburban Fengxian District.
The wave pool in Fengxian District Sports Center has been suspended for an investigation and would not reopen till Wednesday. The boy was pronounced dead at hospital at 8:15pm on Saturday. He was swimming with his cousin and aunt when the incident took place. A lifeguard spotted the boy suffocating under water about 7:20pm and pulled him out of the water. He's later rushed to hospital but pronounced dead.
Security camera footage showed the boy was still having some signs of life when he was first pulled up, The Paper reported. The boy was spotted drowning in waters about 1.4 meters deep, the report said. The pool water is as deep as 2 meters.
Local authorities said they are about six wave pools in Shanghai and they would carry out safety check on the others to find possible loopholes.
A wave pool is a swimming pool in which there are artificially generated waves.
