City suspends all escalators made by producer involved in Hubei escalator death

ALL 90 escalators made by Suzhou Shenlong Elevator Co Ltd that were in use in Shanghai citywide were suspended operation today after an escalator by the producer “swallowed up” a woman in Jingzhou, Hubei Province on Sunday, the city's quality watchdog said today.

These 90 escalators were in operation in seven districts in Shanghai with nine companies involved. Among them, 30 were of the exact same model of the escalator in the accident, the Shanghai Quality and Technical Supervision Bureau said.

The escalators will be checked thoroughly to ensure they are safe to use before they resume normal operation, according to Shen Weimin, deputy director of the bureau.

These escalators have potential safety hazards, said Shen.

The accident occurred on Sunday morning in the Anliang department store. Xiang Liujuan, 30, fell through a loose panel on the end of the ascending escalator. At the moment, she pushed her 2-year-old son to safety, but she was dragged into the machinery to death.

A design flaw was found in the escalator, according to China Quality Daily, a newspaper run by China’s top quality watchdog.
