City launches MOOC education website for local schoolers

Shanghai education authorities have launched a MOOC website in bid to enrich curricular study resources for local middle and high school students.

The website currently includes 21 online courses covering literature, mathematics, social science, natural science, technology and art subjects, but is expected to increase gradually to satisfy diversified interests among the students.

All the courses were developed by four most famous local high schools -- Shang High School, No. 2 High School of East China Normal University, High School Affiliated to Fudan University and High School Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong Normal University – and more schools will join in the effort in the following two years.

The online courses were designed for students to expand their knowledge besides standard syllabus and students are encouraged to make their own decisions to take the courses or not.

“By the MOOC website, we hope to establish a platform for students to adapt themselves to new study methods online and cultivate their self-study abilities,” said Jia Wei, deputy director of Shanghai Education Commission.

All students at middle and high schools in Shanghai can now register on the website (http://gzmooc.edu.sh.cn) with their ID card numbers or student card numbers.
