Chongming fruit finds new sales avenue

TANGERINES grown in the suburban Chongming County will now be available at agricultural speciality stores and even at some parks in downtown Shanghai.

A greenery official said  yesterday it was done to ease the burden on farmers suffering from sluggish sales.

An agricultural products’ network that promoted the  Chongming tangerines had run into difficulties due to limited sales channels and quality problems, said Lu Yuexing, director of the Shanghai Greenery and Public Sanitation Bureau.

Tangerines will also be sold in local parks in autumn this year.

Chongming tangerines were in demand in 2012 when they were sold at Yangpu, Fuxing and Zhongshan parks and Shanghai Botanical Garden. Selling fruits at parks is usually banned.

Authorities are also making efforts to optimize the growing structure of fruits across the city and providing financial support to  farmers to reduce the use of fertilizers and pesticides and replace them with low residue pesticide, Lu said.

The quality of local fruits is also under control.

Jiading District’s grape, Nanhui area’s peach, Chongming Island’s tangerines and Songjiang District’s pear are some fruits grown in Shanghai known for their taste.
