Cabbie nabbed for stealing from drunk passenger

A taxi driver has been detained for stealing from a drunk passenger, police said on Monday.

The taxi driver, whose name was not disclosed, stole a wallet worth 6,000 yuan (US$967) with 7,180 yuan in cash and several bank cards in it, police said.

The driver stole from the passenger, who’s surnamed Ji, when he was sound asleep on the front seat after getting on the car at about 11pm on May 18 near People’s Square.

Police said Ji found out about the theft after waking up halfway from jolts near Dongxin Road in Putuo District and became suspicious as the driver was indifferent to his anxiety and even driving faster and faster.

Confronted, the driver stopped the car and gave the wallet back to Ji, who got off the car and held the door handle while calling the police.

But the driver suddenly started the car and ended up dragging Ji for about 30 meters before being stopped by passers-by.

Police said Ji wasn’t injured.
