Burn victim to receive plastic surgery to fix facial scars

A 10-year-old boy who was left with severe facial scars after a burn accident six years ago will receive free treatment at Shanghai Huamei Plastic Surgery Hospital.

Doctors said the scars covering most of Zhang Hao’s face have impaired his facial movement.

“It will be a long process as multiple surgeries are required around his mouth and nose,” said Dr Zheng Quan. “Laser therapy will be used to soften the scars.”

He said ongoing treatment would help improve Zhang’s facial development.

Zhang was playing beside his grandfather when he was 4 years old and accidentally released a gas from a canister. Both the boy and his grandfather were injured in the ensuing fire.

His mother left the family one year later and the family has sold everything to cover Zhang’s medical expenses.
