Bridge to close to traffic when under repair
TRAFFIC will be off-limits while Waibaidu Bridge, whose steel structure was damaged after a truck hit it Tuesday, undergoes repair, engineers said.
The exact date of the reparation work has yet to be determined.
Experts found the century-old bridge was structurally stable, but several steel trusses which were bent in the accident need to be replaced.
Meanwhile, the weight limit on the bridge was lowered to 10 tons from 20 tons to ensure safety.
A steel truss on the eastern side of the bridge was bent, and part of the steel railings separating vehicle lanes from sidewalks was knocked down in the accident at about 5am.
Shanghai’s iconic Waibaidu Bridge was originally a wooden structure over Suzhou Creek when first built in 1856.
In 1908, it became the nation’s largest steel bridge. It underwent an overhaul in 2008.
