'Botox' sold online fake and dangerous: doctors
LOCAL doctors are warning beauty-seekers not to buy botulinum toxin, commonly sold under the Botox brand name, from online shops because all the online products are fake. Botox is a biological product and is banned from online sales.
Doctors said they have received news of some women buying cheap "Botox" for 60 to 70 yuan (US$9.84-US$11.48) for each injection, and getting the injections the questionable circumstances, such as self-administered or at beauty parlors. Some have turned to qualified doctors for help after suffering adverse reactions like swollen or lumpy faces.
"Injecting Botox at home or at beauty parlors is dangerous," said Dr Jiang Yongqiang from the plastic surgery department of the No. 455 Hospital of the People's Liberation Army. "If the nerves are damaged, people can suffer temporary paralysis in the area of the injured nerves."
The fake products also are very risky.
"The purchase price from pharmaceutical companies for Botox is at least 600 to 700 yuan," Jiang said. "If the price is only 60 to 70 yuan, it must be a counterfeit product. People must go to licensed clinics or hospitals with professional plastic surgeons for the injection."
According to experts, only two botulinum toxin products are approved by the State Food and Drug Administration. Botox imported from Allergan Pharmaceuticals Ireland, and Hongli, produced by Lanzhou Institute of Biological Products.
Other brands are illegal in the nation and customers should be alert, doctors said
