Beaten and robbed, woman narrowly escaped rape after being pulled into greenery near People's Square

POLICE have arrested a man who allegedly attacked, robbed and attempted to rape a woman after pulling her into a public greenery space near the People Square Monday evening.

The suspect, aged 40 and a migrant worker, allegedly attacked the victim on her way back home about 9:20pm Monday and he was arrested the next noon, police said.

Song allegedly had followed the victim walking alone for a long time before attacking her when she was passing the greenery area on Yanzhong Road.

The assailant reportedly tied up the woman's hands behind her back with sealing tapes, robbed her of her Apple phone, wallet and bank cards. He reportedly punched the woman, slapped her face several times before attempting to rape her. The rape failed because of his condition.

The woman managed to escape when he's putting on his pants, local media reported.

Two men passing by helped the woman then and accompanied her to a nearby police station while the suspect fled with her properties.

Police said the suspect was caught from a construction site on Nanjing Road W the next noon.

He allegedly told the police he was short of money and his mobile phone was also broken and sent for repairs.

The victim reportedly had asked for week-long leaves from work because of mental shock.
