Baby heart surgery sets record
A baby boy has become the country’s youngest patient to receive open-heart surgery after a successful operation a little over two hours after he was born.
The boy was pronounced out of danger yesterday, a week after the operation, and was moved out of the Intensive Care Unit at the Shanghai Children’s Medical Center.
His mother Chen Ju, from Zhejiang Province, first came to the center last year when she was 28 weeks pregnant and was told her baby suffered a rare and complicated hear disease — total anomalous pulmonary venous drainage.
The baby was delivered by cesarean at 2pm on January 6 at the Renji Hospital, next door to the Children’s Medical Center. He was immediately transferred and was on the operating theater table by 4:30pm. The previous record was a baby operated on six hours after birth, at the same center in 2005.
