Australia announces 10-year-validity visitor visas to be open to all Chinese citizens

The new Australia Visa Application Center opened in the Jiushi Commercial Building, a hub for foreign visa application centers in Shanghai, on Monday.

It is expected that the center will start to issue 10-year-validity visitor visas for Chinese tourists by the end of 2016, when the recently announced new visa policy will be implemented.

Tourists holding such visas will be entitled to up to three months stay on each entry, the Australian government stated earlier.

In addition, Michaelia Cash, the Assistant Minister for Immigration and Border Protection who is visiting China at the moment, said that the application of the 10 year Australian visitor visa is open to any Chinese citizen depending on the time frame, intention and nature of the visit.

China is currently Australia’s largest source of international students, the second-largest source of permanent migrants, and the largest and fastest growing single source of tourism including business visitor visas of Australia, according to Cash.

It is estimated that Australia will finalize around 650,000 visitor visas for Chinese citizens in 2014 to 2015 by the end of this month, an increase of 20 percent when compared to last year’s record figure, reported Cash.

China is the first country to which Australia introduced the trial of the 10-year-validity visitor visa.

However previously, Canada, the United States and Singapore have already announced the 10-year-validity tourist visas to Chinese citizens.
