Airport fire kills 2, injures 5
TWO people were killed and five others injured, two of them seriously, early yesterday morning in a fire at a construction site at Hongqiao Airport’s Terminal One, the Shanghai government said yesterday.
The fire department said the blaze broke out at 7:16am at No 88 Konggang No 3 Road, and was put out by 9:18am.
Twelve fire trucks and nine fire brigades attended the scene.
“The rescuers carried two victims out of the building at about 8am,” a witness, who declined to be identified, told Shanghai Daily. “They seemed to be badly burned.”
An investigation is underway, but fire officials believe thermal insulation material being used in the project, a revamp of the airport’s T1 complex, caught fire first.
The fire had no operational impact on the international airport, officials said.
