Tarantulas found
THE Wenzhou Office of Hangzhou Customs found 22 live tarantulas in a package from Hungary last week, a violation of China’s animal and plant quarantine law.
The 22 spiders were put in plastic containers with ventilation holes and wet tissues to ensure oxygen and moisture during transport. The hairy spiders are bigger than an adult hand and can be aggressive with threatening fangs.
The package was sent to a Wenzhou resident who claimed the spiders would be used for medical research. Customs officers found he did not work at a medical institution and said items being sent for medical research are not usually shipped to a home address.
The officers believed the man wanted to sell the spiders for profit. A tarantula can fetch up to 100 yuan in some online stores.
