Safety issues found

A TOTAL of 236 unsafe elevators and escalators in Hangzhou have either been repaired or replaced following two fatal accidents elsewhere in China last month. On July 26 a woman fell through a loose floor plate of an escalator in a shopping center in Hubei Province and was dragged into the machine. Then on July 30, a Hangzhou student was killed by a malfunctioning elevator.

The Hangzhou Bureau of Quality and Technical Bureau official Li Shunrong said their employees have checked 15,355 elevators and escalators in the city, focusing mainly on frayed steel cables, erratic door systems and alarm systems, and they found 236 elevators and escalators had problems.
