Recycling workers

Hangzhou authorities plan to use garbage collectors as recycling workers and launch a mobile app for residents to call for a recycler.

They are now selecting residential areas for the trial and the mobile app will be ready early next year, officials told a symposium recently.

Hiring garbage collectors can create jobs for a large number of poor people, improve the city’s image, and popularize garbage sorting and recycling, said Shen Bixi, a Zhejiang University student, who proposed the idea.

Officials with Hangzhou Environmental Group welcomed the idea because many people don’t have the habit of sorting domestic waste and dump everything in the trash container. But, some people are opposed to the idea, saying garbage collectors may pose safety problems if they are allowed to enter buildings to collect wastes.

Tianziling Landfill now collects 93 percent of garbage generated in the city, averaging 4,713 tons a day.
