Historic street turned into showcase for design

The Hangzhou International Design Week has started, and organizers have turned a street into an exhibition pavilion for the event. Through Friday, the annual event will entertain people with various exhibitions, forums and parties on the historic Southern Song Imperial Street (Nan Song Yu Jie).

Once the axis of the city and with a history of 900 years, the street went through a rejuvenation in 2009 led by designer Wang Shu, winner of the prestigious Pritzker Architecture Prize. Now it’s a fashion and vintage-accented strip that includes chic stores, restaurants and tea houses.

This week, the section from Drum Tower to Wuhan Square is hosting 17 pavilions.

A highlight are 10 family-oriented exhibitions that have been designed by teams from famous brands, studios and museums.

Others include prize-winning works of the biannual China International Interior Design Exhibition, the Exhibition of International Famous Tableware Brands and the Exhibition of Frescoes from Yongle Palace of the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368).

The exhibitions open from 10am to 8pm and are free to the public.

Internationally known design experts are lecturing, starting with Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, who spoke at the opening ceremony over the weekend.

“People in the East have their own knowledge of architecture, and their philosophy of life inspires me to discover how to combine nature and architecture to produce natural designs,” Kuma said.

“There are lots of new designs in the 21st century, yet we found traditional designs from the old days are useful and valuable, and should be cherished,” Kuma added.

Lecturers will include Italian industrial designer Luca De Felice, Chinese architect and interior designer Lu Shi-Chieh, industrial designer Guo Wenqi, architect and Professor Wang Yun of Peking University, and photographer and Professor Xue Huake of the China Academy of Art.

Wang will lecture on “the Aesthetics of Chinese Life” today at 2pm at 2/F, 65 Zhongshan Rd M, and Xue will lecture on “Taking a Photo of a Buddha Figure” tomorrow at 2pm at the same place.

Tonight, a New Year’s Eve Party welcoming everyone will be held at the crossing of Yan’an Road and Hefang Street, about 400 meters away from the imperial street but also a part of design week.
