Game clubs a fun way to escape reality

GOOD haunted houses are few and far between in Hangzhou but there are game clubs that provide a chance to have some fun this Halloween.

Takagism is a popular computer adventure game in which players are tasked with trying to escape various scenarios like a prison, locked pyramid or obsolete museum. Players need to look around the room and work together to find clues at how to escape.

The concept has been copied in real life. Hangzhou’s first takagism game clubs sprouted up about two years ago and today there are around 30 in the city.

Shanghai Daily takes a look at some with a good reputation.

Xcape

Finding Xcape isn’t easy.

“The first level of the game is to find us,” club founder Leo Wang says, joking.

The club features four “escape” rooms with light and sound effects suitable for six to 10 players. All scenarios are designed by the club’s team including an engineer, architect and graphic designers.

The Prison Break room is seemingly just an empty room with iron walls, but it’s actually a huge box that can be rotated and fences can be raised from under the floor.

Xcape has opened a second branch at Jinsha Lake and, fortunately, it’s easy to find. Machine Enemy is its only scenario at the moment, but it is a fully machine-operated game ready to challenge players.

In the room, players need to first pass red laser beams, like how action stars do in films.

After identifying fingerprints to pass through a tunnel and enter the room, players need to solve some puzzles to change the color of light in the room and find more clues.

The club also has a hall for customers to play board games.

Scenarios: Machine Enemy, Prison Break, Return of the Pharaoh, Night at the Museum, Curse of the Deserted

Address: 15/F, Guodu Building, 361Fengqi Rd (Tip: go to Guodu Apartment first and then find Guodu Building)

Tele: (0571) 8671-6867

Address: Jinsha Lake subway station, exit B

Tel: (0571) 8717-2617

Price: 88 yuan (US$14) to 98 yuan per person

Vic Game Club

All scenario rooms include lasers, sensors, mirrors, machines and lighting effects to make for intriguing and fun adventures.

Every room is machine-operated and players are asked to find clues in order to open a machine door or coffin.

In the Vanishing Pyramid scenario, players need to solve various puzzles to unlock a 2-meter-tall and 3-meter-wide machine.

Scenarios: X Space, Ancient Tomb, Vanishing Pyramid

Address : Room 607, No. 1 Mansion, MCC Zhongtian Building, intersection of Wenyi Rd W. and Tongpu Rd

Tel: (0571) 8106-0839

Price: 79 yuan to 89 yuan per person

No. 1 Base

The club owns six rooms with five now available to players. No. 1 Base has tried to be as authentic as possible since sand is on the floor in both Curse of the Pirates and Invasion of the Pyramid to make players feel as if they are on a beach or in a desert.

There are few lights and no windows in the rooms so players will need to use flashlights as they solve the clues in order to escape.

Scenarios: Curse of the Pirates, Invasion of the Pyramid, Jurassic Park,

Address: 615 Jianguo Rd N.

Tel: (0571) 8838-6846

Price: 78 yuan to 98 yuan per person

Galaxy Club

King Solomon’s Mines has 10 levels that require players to complete in order before going on to the next one.

Players act as thieves hunting for treasure in the room. They are given one hour to solve all the puzzles, including decoding notes and locks, solving soduku and reasoning messages, and shooting an arrow to hit a lock far away.

The club offers free drinks, Wi-Fi and board games. Call to book in advance.

Three more scenarios are being prepared but no details were available on when they would be ready.

Scenarios: King Solomon’s Mines

Address: Room 3-5, Jiahui Office Building, 179 Chaohui Rd

Tel: (0571) 8703-9551

Price: 69 yuan to 78 yuan per person
